President Vjosa Osmani, acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Assembly Chairman Dimal Basha, and Ambassador William Walker paid tribute to the victims of the Reçak Massacre at the Memorial Complex in Reçak.
The dignitaries laid wreaths at the main monument, where the names and photographs of 45 civilians killed by Serbian forces on January 15, 1999, are displayed.
One day after the massacre, William Walker, the OSCE Ambassador to Kosovo at the time, visited the site and was horrified by the scene of the murdered civilians. Reflecting on the tragedy, Walker described it as a “massacre and a crime against humanity”, calling it the saddest event of his life. He added that reporting the massacre alerted the international community to Serbian crimes in Kosovo and ultimately paved the way for NATO’s intervention in Serbia.
The commemoration in Reçak this year also included ceremonies at the memorial complex, where citizens and officials continue to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in one of Kosovo’s darkest chapters.
