Today, June 23, marks the final day for political parties in Kosovo to formally declare their coalitions for the upcoming Local Elections on October 12. These elections will determine the Mayors of Municipalities and members of Municipal Assemblies.
However, as the deadline looms, there’s a strong indication that most political parties prefer to compete individually. So far, only two political entities have officially notified the Central Election Commission (CEC) of their intention to run as a coalition.
According to the latest announcement from CEC Spokesperson Valmir Elezi, as of Friday, only the Demokratska Stranka Bošnjaka and Demokratska Stranka Vatan have formed a coalition under the name “Koalicija Vakat” and will seek certification for electoral participation. This suggests that the majority of parties will opt for standalone campaigns in the local races.
Today also signifies the deadline for political parties to inform the CEC if they do not wish to participate in the elections. Elezi clarified that “according to the Law on General Elections, within 15 days of the election date being announced by the President of Kosovo, a registered political party that does not wish to be certified for elections must notify the Office that it is not competing in the elections, or that the political party will seek certification through a coalition in accordance with this law.”
