Today, Kosovo commemorates the 26th anniversary of the formation of the Territorial Defense Forces (TMK), established following the Kumanovo and Rambouillet agreements in 1999. The TMK emerged from the transformation of the UÇK after the NATO intervention in Kosovo.
Role of TMK
Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Agim Çeku, TMK’s responsibilities included:
- Disaster response and emergency aid
- Mine clearance operations
- Post-war reconstruction
TMK played a crucial role in stabilizing Kosovo and assisting in its recovery after the conflict.
Transition to Kosovo Security Forces
According to the Ahtisaari Plan of 2007, TMK was set to be disbanded and replaced by a new, professional, and multi-ethnic security force.
“A new force will be created for the security of Kosovo. The Kosovo Protection Corps will be dissolved one year after this agreement is ratified,” the plan stated.
On January 21, 2009, the Kosovo Security Force (FSK) was officially established. Seven years later, FSK evolved into the Kosovo Armed Forces, strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
