Kosovo Marks 27th Anniversary of the Reçak Massacre

Kosovo today commemorates the 27th anniversary of the Reçak Massacre, one of the most tragic crimes committed during the 1998–1999 war. On January 15, 1999, Serbian forces killed 45 unarmed Albanian civilians in the village of Reçak, an event that shocked the international community and became a turning point leading to NATO intervention.

A series of official commemorative activities will be held to honor the victims and preserve the historical memory of the massacre. The ceremonies are organized under the patronage of Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, Assembly Speaker Dimal Basha, Prime Minister Albin Kurti, the Mayor of Shtime Dr. Qemajl Aliu, and associations stemming from the Kosovo War.

Commemorative Program

  • 09:00 – Homages by municipal representatives at the martyrs’ cemeteries in Shtime, Mollopolc, and Reçak
  • 10:30State leaders pay tribute at the Reçak Memorial Complex
  • 12:00Commemorative Academy at the House of Culture in Shtime
  • 13:00Traditional exhibition “William Walker Award 2026” at the House of Culture, Shtime
  • 15:00Final match of the “Days of Reçak” Memorial Five-a-Side Football Tournament at the “Arbëri” Sports Field in Reçak

In addition, students across all schools in Kosovo will dedicate their first class of the day to the Reçak Massacre, ensuring that younger generations remain informed about the crimes committed and the importance of justice and remembrance.

The Reçak Massacre remains a symbol of civilian suffering and a key moment in Kosovo’s struggle for freedom, continuing to hold profound historical and political significance both domestically and internationally.
