Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, along with members of Lëvizja Vetëvendosje, paid tribute at the main cemetery in Prishtina on the 19th anniversary of the death of Arben Xheladini.
Xheladini, together with fellow activist Mon Balaj, was killed on February 10, 2007, by Romanian UNMIK police during a protest against Kosovo’s negotiations with Serbia and the Ahtisaari Plan. The demonstration escalated when barricades in the square were removed, and UNMIK police responded with lethal force, leaving multiple people injured. Tear gas, reportedly used for the first time in the city, lingered for five days across Prishtina’s squares.
The KMDLNj (Kosovo Center for Human Rights) has called for justice for the victims, urging that Xheladini and Balaj be recognized as political victims, rehabilitated, and granted the status and rights afforded to civilian war victims. The organization also demanded moral and material compensation for those injured during the protest, in accordance with the law.
