The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) are awaiting an official invitation from Prime Minister Albin Kurti, leader of Vetëvendosje, to begin consultations on the election of the country’s new president.

Although Kurti announced seven days ago that consultations with parliamentary parties would start, both PDK and LDK report that no formal meetings have taken place so far. Vetëvendosje has not provided a timeline for when the consultations will be initiated.

Vetëvendosje currently holds the majority in the Assembly, with 66 deputies, giving the party significant influence over the process. President Vjosa Osmani’s term expires on April 4, 2026, but according to the Kosovo Constitution, the presidential election must take place one month before the term ends, by March 4, 2026, to avoid triggering early parliamentary elections.

So far, President Osmani is the only figure to express interest in a second five-year term, but she has not secured the 30 deputy signatures required to officially register her candidacy.

PDK deputy Artan Behrami told KosovaPress that his party will participate in any meetings called regarding the presidency, emphasizing that the election should result from a political agreement. On whether PDK would support Osmani, Behrami stated that no official candidacies have been presented and highlighted that the president should symbolize unity among citizens.

LDK deputy Armend Zemaj echoed similar sentiments, stating that the presidential selection process involves all parliamentary parties, and that consensus should be reached through political negotiations. He confirmed that LDK has not yet decided on a candidate, including whether to support Osmani.
