Approximately 42 hours after the tragic event, the Kosovo Police have released a more detailed version of what occurred in the early minutes of July 7, 2025, in Lipjan, where 27-year-old Agon Zejnullahu died while being arrested by police officers.
Police Version of Events Leading to Death
The Police stated that on July 7, 2025, around 00:12, they received six phone calls from citizens reporting a person exhibiting aggressive behavior and posing a danger to passers-by by assaulting them. According to the Police, Agon Zejnullahu was also a danger to himself, chasing vehicles and attempting to enter them.
The incident was reported on “Haradin Bajrami” street in Lipjan. The Police communiqué states that upon receiving the information, police units responded immediately to stop the attacks, prevent harm to citizens, and de-escalate the situation.
The Police also claim that officers, in self-defense, were forced to use police “spray.” “The same behaviors, according to citizens’ reports, were also displayed in the presence of police officers, who, with the aim of bringing the situation under control and escorting him to the police station, due to his uncontrollable and dangerous behaviors, active resistance, and attempt to attack police officers, the police officers in self-defense were forced to use police spray,” the statement reads.
Pre-Arrest Negotiations and Medical Response
In the communiqué issued today, July 8, 2025, the Kosovo Police state that prior to the arrest of the deceased, police officers communicated and negotiated with him for 5-6 minutes to persuade him to be escorted to the station. The police also stated that during this time, the shift supervisor called for emergency medical assistance to provide aid to the person, as they continuously observed his health and psychological state.
“In this course, he was uncooperative and tried to flee, but police officers managed to arrest him. The ambulance with the emergency medical team arrived at the scene very quickly (within 3 minutes) to provide first aid to the person in question, where the emergency unit then confirmed his death,” the Police statement emphasized.
Discovery of Suspected Narcotics and Ongoing Investigation
Furthermore, the Police reported that at the scene, personal belongings and a powdered substance suspected to be narcotics were found in Agon Zejnullahu’s possession, which has been sent for examination.
According to the Police, a criminal investigation has been initiated by order of the State Prosecutor, and the body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy.
As stated in the communiqué, four police officers and one sergeant have been suspended based on the recommendation of the Police Inspectorate. Following their interrogation, and the re-qualification of the offense, they have been detained.
“The Kosovo Police, in cooperation and coordination with competent institutions, have undertaken all investigative actions to clarify the case, including securing material evidence and interviewing witnesses. All secured evidence, including camera footage that helps clarify the case, has been shared with relevant institutions, namely the Police Inspectorate and the Prosecutor’s Office,” the Police stressed.
The communiqué adds that the Police are in close and full cooperation with relevant institutions to fully shed light on this case, the outcome of which will be determined after the completion of investigations, examinations, and the receipt of the autopsy report from Forensic Medicine.
KALLXO.com reported that a request for the determination of security measures for the five police officers arrested and detained following the death of 27-year-old Agon Zejnullahu, who allegedly died during his arrest in Lipjan, is expected to be drafted and submitted today.
KALLXO.com learned that the hearing will be held on July 9, 2025, after 10:00, at the Prishtina Court branch in Lipjan.
Alban Zejnullahu, Agon Zejnullahu’s brother, stated to the media that the police officers are responsible for his brother’s death, claiming they were seen on top of him during the arrest. He recounted the moment the family received the tragic news, stating that upon arriving at the Emergency room with his father, he realized his brother had died, and no police officers at that difficult moment would tell them how he died. He expressed surprise that even some police officers he knew did not offer condolences.
Agon Zejnullahu died shortly after his arrest by the Kosovo Police, and this case is under investigation. Five police officers have been arrested on suspicion of the criminal offense of negligent homicide.
Interestingly, neither the police report from July 7, 2025, nor the report from July 8, 2025, contains any information about the tragic incident that occurred in Lipjan.
