Xhavit Haliti, a member of the Democratic Party of Kosovo’s (PDK) Steering Council, has addressed the ongoing political stalemate in the country.

Haliti stated that while political impasses are not uncommon in politics, such a prolonged deadlock has not been a common practice in Kosovo previously.

It is the right of citizens and those who demand that institutions be established as soon as possible, but on the other hand, the political battle between the ruling party and the opposition is a legitimate battle for both sides, who try to benefit from this situation to be closer to power, or rather, to take power,” Haliti declared on RTV Dukagjini. He added that “in political battles, all political parties fight for power, they don’t fight for the state, as some are declaring. The state has its foundations, its mechanisms, and its organizations that protect it and deal with these issues.”

Haliti further expressed that there should be a political agreement among all parties to either establish the institutions or find a way that no one can declare, and no one can force anyone to go to free, extraordinary elections.

“On the other hand, I think that in the Assembly of Kosovo, according to the decisions and suggestions of the Constitutional Court, the deputy elected by the people has three options: to vote for, against, or abstain. Any other action, I think, does not justify being in the hall,” he said.

Haliti also commented that the practice of parties not participating in the vote at all is an inherited practice that has never been implemented according to the instructions given by the Constitutional Court. “Now, since it has never been applied, it continues in the same vein, and I think it will go on like this until a second decision,” Haliti stated.

He concluded by saying that his expectations were for one of the major parties to find an opportunity to form a coalition. “Coalitions are not made only in Kosovo between opposing parties… political parties must find a solution, move forward, take the next step,” he urged.
