On International Women’s Day, the Philatelic Department of Kosovo Post has issued a commemorative stamp in honor of Nekibe Kelmendi, a prominent human rights activist and former Minister of Justice.
Nekibe Kelmendi (1944–2011) was a dedicated lawyer and politician who spent her life advocating for human rights and justice. She was one of the strongest voices for victims of violence and left an indelible mark on Kosovo’s legal and political history.
A Life of Advocacy and Sacrifice
After the Kosovo War, Kelmendi served as Minister of Justice, where she played a crucial role in building the country’s legal institutions. She worked tirelessly to strengthen the justice system and ensure citizens’ rights were protected.
However, her personal journey was marked by profound tragedy. In 1999, during the Kosovo War, Serbian forces abducted and executed her husband and two sons. Despite this unimaginable loss, she transformed her grief into strength, continuing her relentless fight for victims’ rights and justice.
A Lasting Legacy
Nekibe Kelmendi’s courage, resilience, and dedication to justice remain an inspiration for future generations. She is remembered as a symbol of strength and commitment in the pursuit of human rights and the rule of law.
To commemorate her legacy, Kosovo Post has released a special stamp series, which includes a €1.30 postage stamp and a First Day Cover. These will be available to the public starting today until stocks run out.
