Kosovo has received a new delivery of OMTAS anti-tank missile systems, marking another step in strengthening the country’s defense capabilities, Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci announced on Tuesday.
According to Maqedonci, the delivery is part of a contract signed in December 2023 with Turkey’s state-owned defense manufacturer Roketsan, and represents a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF).
Enhancing Kosovo’s Defensive Capabilities
The OMTAS (Orta Menzilli Tanksavar Silah) is a modern medium-range anti-tank guided missile system, designed to neutralize advanced armored vehicles, including tanks equipped with reactive armor, as well as fortified military targets.
“These systems are an important investment in strengthening Kosovo’s defensive capacities,” Maqedonci said, emphasizing that the acquisition aims to improve the KSF’s readiness across different terrains, engagement distances, and threat scenarios.
Operational Flexibility and Strategic Readiness
In his statement, the defense minister highlighted that increasing both the diversity and quantity of anti-tank missile systems enhances the army’s operational flexibility and ability to respond effectively to a wide range of security challenges.
“The expansion of anti-tank missile systems for our army is intended to cover various operational ranges, terrains, and threat scenarios, thereby increasing operational flexibility,” Maqedonci stated.
Part of Long-Term Defense Modernization
The delivery underscores Kosovo’s continued efforts to modernize its defense forces in line with international standards, while deepening defense cooperation with Turkey, a key strategic partner in the field of military development and training.
