In a government meeting held on Wednesday, the Government of Kosovo approved a decision to accept up to 50 migrants from the United States within a year. The move aims to facilitate their safe return to their country of origin, Rks News reports.
The approved decision clarifies that these migrants will stay temporarily in Kosovo, where they will have the opportunity to return to their home countries under secure conditions.
“Approved the decision to offer immediate and temporary protection for fifty (50) individuals, within the framework of cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Kosovo and the United States of America. These individuals, during their stay in the Republic of Kosovo, will act in accordance with the current legislation and will enjoy the rights defined by the applicable laws,” the government stated.
Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti shared on Facebook that the selection of migrants will be made from a proposed list of individuals who meet specific criteria related to the rule of law and public order.
He added that, during their stay in Kosovo, the individuals will operate:
“…in accordance with our existing legislation and will enjoy the rights defined under our laws.”
Kurti emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation with the United States, stating:
“The United States of America remains our unwavering ally, and the Republic of Kosovo will always be a reliable partner. We are forever grateful for their continuous assistance and cooperation, and we deeply value their support in defense, development, and especially in our path toward Euro-Atlantic integration.”
