On the eve of Kosovo’s local elections, the Agency for Information and Privacy (AIP) has reiterated its call to political parties and candidates to safeguard citizens’ personal data during the electoral process scheduled for October 12, 2025.
The AIP emphasized several key obligations for political parties and election subjects:
- Ensure that all personal data processing is legally justified, such as through citizen consent, legitimate political interest, or other legal grounds.
- Do not use contact information collected through public functions or other means for political marketing purposes.
- Avoid exposing personal data in communications via email, SMS, or phone calls without prior consent.
- Respect citizens’ right to object to the use of their data for direct marketing and immediately stop communications upon such objections.
- Avoid profiling or mass processing of sensitive data unless there is a clear legal basis and adequate safeguards, including prior assessment of data protection impact where necessary.
- Ensure transparency by providing clear and accessible privacy policies explaining how personal data is processed.
The agency also urged that during the elections, all personal data of citizens be protected and handled in accordance with legal requirements.
