The Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Alain Berset, has addressed the issue of Kosovo’s membership application, acknowledging the current position of the process and reiterating the next steps.
Speaking to Klan Kosova, Berset emphasized that the matter is now in the hands of the Council’s decision-making body:
“As you may know, Kosovo’s application is now on the table of the Committee of Ministers. There is a positive opinion from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and now it is up to the member states to decide.”
Berset underlined that the CoE had awaited the outcome of the elections in Kosovo before proceeding further, and now the focus turns to the next steps:
“We are waiting – the Committee of Ministers has waited until after the elections in Kosovo, and now it is time to consider the next steps. I must repeat again: the responsibility lies with the member states. There are 46 countries that must decide how to move forward with the application. From the Secretariat’s side, we support all the necessary work they must do in order to make a decision.”
This statement reaffirms the CoE’s internal procedures and makes it clear that, despite institutional support from within the organization, Kosovo’s fate depends on the political will and consensus among the 46 member states.
