The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, issued a stern warning against any attempt to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying that such an action would “open Pandora’s box” and dramatically escalate tensions in the region, Anadolu Agency reports via Sky News and Rks News.

In an interview with Sky News, Peskov stated that if Israel potentially with U.S. support were to carry out an assassination of Khamenei, it would provoke a very negative reaction from Russia. “We would absolutely not endorse that,” he said.

Peskov emphasized that forcibly changing Iran’s regime is “unthinkable and unacceptable,” warning that any such attempt would trigger extreme destabilization within Iran and further complicate the regional crisis.

“It would create a new cycle of conflict, and the involvement of additional countries would lead to further escalation of tensions,” he added.

Peskov’s remarks come amid the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran, which began on June 13 when Israel launched extensive strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities and military command centers.

Russia—maintaining close ties with Tehran—has repeatedly called for actions that avoid inflaming the situation any further.
