Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, during the solemn session marking the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s Independence, emphasized that today is a day of remembrance for all those who sacrificed so much for the freedom that the people of Kosovo enjoy today.

He added that there is no room for compromise when it comes to the Republic and Kosovo’s sovereignty.

“Today is a day of remembrance for all those men, women, and children who sacrificed everything for the Republic of Kosovo. The activists and fighters who strove to establish the Republic—at least since 1968 onward—may not have shared the same vision of what the Republic would look like, but they shared the same desire for freedom. The Republic is first and foremost an institution of freedom, an expression of sovereignty, a tool for development. Therefore, when it comes to the Republic and sovereignty, we cannot yield, because we cannot compromise on freedom and development,” said Kurti.

Furthermore, Kurti stated that the fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) are being unjustly accused, as they dared to take up arms for freedom.

“The charges by the Special Prosecutor’s Office in The Hague for crimes against humanity do not hold. They do not take into account the historical and political context of the liberation war, to which we owe today’s freedom,” he said.
