Prime Minister Albin Kurti emphasized the strong relationship between Kosovo and the United States but distinguished the priorities of the Trump administration and its successor, the Biden administration.

In an interview with the Spanish daily “El Mundo,” Kurti mentioned the economic agreements reached between Kosovo and Serbia, stating that this was the approach during the Trump administration (1st term) to promote stability.

As for the Biden administration, he said it has strengthened democratic institutions in the Balkans.

“Kosovo maintains a strong bilateral relationship with the United States, based on its ongoing commitment to our sovereignty and our integration into the EU and NATO. During Trump’s first term, economic agreements between Kosovo and Serbia were prioritized to promote stability, while the Biden administration has focused on strengthening democratic institutions in the Balkans. Although these differences reflect changes in approach, I do not believe that the United States will change its position towards Kosovo; we work closely with Washington,” Kurti said.

Regarding Spain’s non-recognition of Kosovo, Kurti stated that there are other EU countries with stronger ties to Serbia than Spain, yet they have recognized Kosovo’s independence.

“This shows that recognition of Kosovo is not necessarily conditioned by economic ties with Serbia, but by a sovereign decision based on the principles of justice and international stability. If Spain recognizes Kosovo, it would be an implied step towards stability within the Balkans. EU enlargement is on the negotiating table in Brussels, and this would be a perfect response to those seeking to weaken the integrity and unity of Europe,” he said.

According to him, the countries do not have any issues between them that could lead to a blockage of recognition.

“Historically, Spain has been marked by territories that have claimed greater autonomy or even independence. The issue of Kosovo has no connection with the internal political situation in Spain,” he stated.
