Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day, highlighting the atrocities suffered by the victims of Nazi concentration camps, where approximately 1.1 million people were killed or perished under inhumane conditions.

Kurti reflected on the historical context leading to these horrors, mentioning the Nuremberg Laws, Kristallnacht, and the progression toward the Nazis’ so-called “Final Solution.”

Albania’s Role During the Holocaust

Kurti emphasized Albania’s exceptional role during World War II, stating that Albanians became a symbol of humanity by sheltering and protecting Jewish people.

“After World War II, the number of Jews in Albania was around ten times greater than before the war. Dozens of Albanians and their families have been honored with the title ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ for their contributions,” he noted.

A Legacy of Solidarity

Kurti connected Albania’s history of protecting Jews with the broader experience of the Albanian people as victims of genocidal acts, underlining their commitment to the principle of “Never Again.”

“As a nation that sheltered and saved Jews, and as a people who have been victims of genocidal acts, Albanians stand among those who declare ‘Never Again,’ joining in this solemn remembrance,” Kurti concluded, paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.
