Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, announced at the Western Balkans Summit Against Racial Discrimination in Prishtina that the government is drafting a new anti-discrimination law aligned with Council of Europe human rights standards.
Kurti highlighted early marriage cases within the Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian communities, stating that such issues have been addressed by Kosovo Police. He emphasized efforts to ensure minority communities are employed in Kosovo institutions, mentioning recent police oath ceremonies as an example.
The Western Balkans Summit Against Racial Discrimination is an annual event bringing together governments, civil society organizations, independent experts, and communities to collectively address racial discrimination against Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian communities in the region.
The summit is organized by the Office of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, with support from Terre des Hommes Mission in Kosovo, Voice of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians, and the HEKS Foundation. It is part of the “Social Justice for Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptians” project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
