Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated at a meeting of his party, the Vetëvendosje Movement, that Murat Jashari would be “the right choice at the right moment” for President of the country.
He said that his election as President “would be an honor for the Republic, stability for the institution, and security for the nation.”
Kurti added that Murat Jashari’s election to this position “was and continues to remain the ideal case.”
Excerpts from Kurti’s speech at the party meeting:
“In order to begin governing swiftly and effectively, what remains is the issue of electing the President. Therefore, dear delegates of the General Council, allow me a few words on this matter, for which only a few days remain. After forming the government, we began intensive engagement on this process, bearing in mind the short time available, but always without forgetting the essential fact that electing the President requires 80 votes in the Assembly.”
“I have been fully aware that the Vetëvendosje Movement alone does not have 80 votes. For this reason, I immediately contacted the leaders of the two largest opposition parties in order to discuss ways of overcoming this challenge in an institutional and responsible manner. The meetings were constructive, and initially there was agreement that the country needs a unifying figure. Such a figure, undisputed by all, would certainly be a candidate from the emblematic Jashari family. My conviction has been and continues to remain that a figure, a professor and personality such as Murat Jashari, would enjoy cross-party support, would be an honor for the Republic, stability for the institution, and security for the nation.”
Kurti also referred to the “geopolitical circumstances, from the war in Ukraine, the U.S.-Iran conflict and tensions in the Near and Middle East, as well as threats and repeated attacks from Serbia, including the terrorist aggression in Banjska, the kinetic attack on the Ibër-Lepenc canal, and daily threats from our northern neighbor,” saying that these conditions required reflection and a figure capable of withstanding the storms the country may face.
“In difficult times, as you all know, we have always found support and inspiration in the Jashari family, just as we did during the war under the leadership of Commander Adem Jashari. Therefore, even today, the selection of a figure such as Murat Jashari would be the right choice at the right moment. This was and continues to remain the ideal case.”
