Outgoing Prime Minister Albin Kurti, in a statement on Tuesday, responded to public criticism regarding his repeated avoidance of journalists inside the Assembly.

Kurti, who has not made any comments during his recent appearances in the Kosovo Assembly, clarified his stance by differentiating between his dual roles:

“I’m speaking here, not in the Assembly, because there I’m just one of 48 deputies of the winning political entity. Whereas here, I speak as the acting Prime Minister,” he told EO.

Kurti’s refusal to speak to journalists during Assembly sessions has been criticized by media outlets and civil society, especially amid political uncertainty following inconclusive efforts to form a new government.

Earlier, Kurti had also commented on the unusual role of the opposition, claiming that instead of shortening the government’s mandate, they’re unintentionally prolonging it:

“I have no explanation for this situation that our institutions are going through. According to Article 31 of the Law on Government, we have fewer powers as a caretaker government, but our workload remains the same — we still have a lot to do,” he said.

Kurti emphasized that the stalemate can only end once the Assembly elects its presidency, allowing the formation of a new government:

“Until a new government is formed, Kurti 3 remains the acting government. That’s the reality — there’s nothing more to add.”
