Miroslav Lajčak, the European Union’s envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, will conclude his mandate in two days. He stated that the EU will remain engaged in the dialogue process and the achievement of an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia.
Lajčak noted that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, along with Peter Sorensen, his successor in this role, will be involved in this matter.
As Lajčak explained, after the parliamentary elections in Kosovo, which will take place on February 9, a proposal for Kosovo and Serbia will be put forward.
“We have a very good analysis of the situation and we know very well that, especially since last autumn, when Kosovo entered the election campaign, we need to address specific issues. We had three meetings of chief negotiators during the autumn and winter. We sat for hours and discussed very concretely a range of issues.”
“We are preparing for the EU to start high-level talks after the elections in Kosovo. The new High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security, Kaja Kallas, has made it clear that she will be directly involved and wants to lead the process. A position from the EU is being prepared, as well as a proposal for both parties,” Lajčak told Serbian Radio-Television.
“Of course, I cannot speak in more detail about this at the moment. My successor, Peter Sorensen, an experienced diplomat who knows the Balkans well, will be there to assist Kaja Kallas in this work.”
Lajčak will conclude his mandate on January 31.
