Miroslav Lajcak will remain in the position of EU Special Representative for dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, a Foreign Service diplomat familiar with the process told reporters in Brussels.
“Miroslav Lajcak’s mandate expires on August 31, but Josep Borrell has decided to extend it for a few months,” he said.
As reported by Serbian media, the EU official said that Borrell decided to take such a step because he believes that the new High Representative of the European Union for foreign policy and security should be the one to appoint his Representative special for dialogue.
However, it is not known how long Lajcak will stay in that position.
“Lajcak will remain in that position as long as necessary, to ensure that the process does not remain without a mediator,” said the EU diplomat.
The new high representative of the European Union for foreign policy and security is chosen by the European Parliament within the EU Commission elections, based on the proposal of the European Council. The election of the Commissioner is scheduled for autumn, but could be accelerated if political agreements are reached earlier.
