Former Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák, who also served as the EU Special Envoy for the Kosovo–Serbia dialogue, has announced that he is stepping down from his position as advisor to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, following the publication of his communications with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Slovak media reported.

Prime Minister Fico stated that he would accept Lajčák’s resignation, while sharply criticizing his political opponents, whom he said he had not seen display “this level of hypocrisy” in a long time.

“Miro has once again proven himself to be an excellent diplomat, and I accept his offer to end our cooperation, even though all of us—not just me—are losing an extraordinary source of experience in diplomacy and foreign policy. It is strange that a similar symbiosis of media, opposition, and governing parties did not target opposition leader Šimeček, who, through grant fraud at the Slovak and EU level, represents a far greater threat to our country’s reputation than the prime minister’s advisor, Miroslav Lajčák,” Fico said in a statement.
