Lajčak’s Mandate as Dialogue Envoy Officially Extended Until January

RKS NEWS

The special representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajčak, will continue to hold this position until the beginning of next year.

This decision comes as the ambassadors of the European Union member states have agreed to extend Lajčak’s mandate until the end of January 2025.

The confirmation of the extension of his mandate in managing the normalization process between Kosovo and Serbia comes a few months after Lajčak was appointed as the European Union Ambassador to Switzerland, a position he was supposed to assume in September.

The EU’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, requested the extension of his mandate, aiming to ensure no vacuum is created in this post until Lajčak’s successor is appointed.

The decision on Lajčak’s successor will be made by Borrell’s successor.

Kaja Kallas, the nominee for the EU’s chief diplomat, must first assume her new role in late autumn before addressing potential candidates for the new dialogue envoy.

Although nothing is certain yet, two names are currently mentioned as potential candidates for Lajčak’s position: Dane Peter Sørensen, former EU Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Pekka Haavisto, former Finnish Foreign Minister.

While the possibility of the EU changing its approach to the dialogue cannot be ruled out, EU diplomats warn that old obligations of the parties remain.

This primarily involves continuing the insistence that both Pristina and Belgrade must implement all agreements reached within the dialogue framework.
