Latvia has announced that a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea, which connects the countries in the region to international communication networks, has sustained significant damage that may have been caused by an “external impact.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the damage, though there is insufficient information to identify who might be responsible. Latvia reported that its navy had deployed a patrol ship to inspect a vessel suspected of being involved in the incident. Two other ships in the area are also being investigated by the Latvian navy.

“We have determined that there are external damages, and they are significant,” said Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina to reporters after an extraordinary government meeting.

Latvia is coordinating with NATO and the countries of the Baltic Sea region to clarify the circumstances of the incident, she said in a special post on X.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that his country is working closely with Latvia and NATO.
