Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, accused the West of interfering in the internal affairs of the Balkans, specifically highlighting Kosovo and Bosnia. He claimed that Western actions are leading to a “weakening of sovereignty” and, according to him, are attacking the “vital interests of the Serbian people,” including the “historical rights of the Serbian Orthodox Church.”

Lavrov reiterated that Kosovo’s declaration of independence was in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which he described as an act that “threatens Serbia’s statehood.” He also criticized the West for what he described as attempts to destabilize Bosnia, suggesting that international interventions serve as an example of undermining sovereignty and disregarding the UN Charter.

Lavrov’s statements reflect Russia’s stance on maintaining influence in the region and opposing international decisions that, according to Moscow, infringe upon the rights and interests of Serbs in the Balkans.
