Hykmete Bajrami, a Member of Parliament for the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has strongly criticized a recent statement from the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO), labeling its call to businesses as “scandalous.” Bajrami has also urged the Prosecution to investigate the entire decision-making chain within the energy sector.

“Scandalous” Call Amidst Surging Import Costs

In her reaction, Bajrami stated that the “Energy Regulatory Office, as one of the main actors bearing responsibility for everything happening in the country’s energy sector, has today issued a scandalous call.” She highlighted that since June 1st, when businesses entered the “free market,” electricity imports have increased eightfold.

“These businesses still don’t know what their June and July bills will be, yet you are urging them to sign contracts with private operators/energy traders,” Bajrami asserted. “You are not dealing with the reality of these businesses. You are ignoring the fact that the June bill and offers from private operators are decisive factors in whether these businesses will continue operating or not. Therefore, without any sense of responsibility, you make such absurd calls.”

Urgent Questions for ERO and Call for Investigation

Bajrami posed critical questions to ERO regarding the situation after August 1st for businesses that fail to sign contracts:

  • “Will you leave them without power?”
  • “Will you shut them down?”
  • “Will you leave over 100,000 workers jobless?”

She also challenged ERO’s claim of court support, noting that “in the last month, we have witnessed dozens of Commercial Court decisions that are in favor of businesses, not in your favor.”

Concluding her statement, Bajrami called upon the Prosecution to investigate the entire decision-making chain in the energy sector. “We cannot sacrifice the entire state for the profits of energy traders and their connections with those in power,” she emphasized.
