Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has extended his 31-year rule after being declared the winner of a presidential election dismissed by Western governments as neither free nor fair, reports Reuters.
Election Results and International Backlash
According to Belarus’s Central Election Commission, Lukashenko secured 86.8% of the vote, with a turnout of 85.7%. However, the election faced widespread criticism, as independent media are banned in Belarus, and opposition figures have been imprisoned or exiled.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned the election on social media, stating, “The people of Belarus had no choice. It is a bitter day for all those who long for freedom and democracy.”
Opposition and Protests
Exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya described the election as a “ritual for dictators,” while protests against Lukashenko occurred in Warsaw and other Eastern European cities. Lukashenko dismissed the criticism, declaring, “I don’t give a damn about the West.”
Ties with Russia
Lukashenko’s re-election solidifies his alignment with Putin. Belarus has been a critical ally in Russia’s geopolitical strategies, serving as a staging ground for Russian troops during the invasion of Ukraine. Russian tactical nuclear weapons are also stationed in Belarus.
Human Rights Concerns
Belarus continues to face scrutiny over human rights abuses. Human rights group Viasna reports that approximately 1,250 political prisoners remain in detention, although Lukashenko claims to have released over 250 on humanitarian grounds.

Political analysts speculate that Lukashenko may seek to restore ties with Western nations if the war in Ukraine concludes, aiming to lift sanctions that have heavily impacted Belarus’s economy.
