As the constitutional deadline for electing Kosovo’s new president approaches, Lutfi Haziri, Deputy Leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has stated that recent meetings between party leaders have focused on reaching a broad political consensus on a new head of state.

Speaking on Debat Plus, Haziri said that the three main political leaders are engaged in efforts to agree on a candidate who would be elected through wide political consensus.

“What happened yesterday in the meeting is that there is a joint commitment by the three main leaders of political parties to engage in finding a name built through broad consensus,” he said.

The leaders involved in the discussions include Prime Minister Albin Kurti, PDK leader Bedri Hamza, and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku.

Haziri added that if such a consensus fails, an alternative scenario could involve a political agreement between the leading party and another party to secure the necessary votes in the Assembly.

“You heard the chairman of Vetëvendosje say that there must be certainty when entering the Assembly to elect the president, so as not to risk the elections. This shows an insistence on avoiding a failed process that could send the country back to elections,” Haziri emphasized.
