The Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) have reached an agreement to nominate Bekim Sejdiu as their joint candidate for President of the Republic of Kosovo.
The candidacy was announced at a joint press conference attended by acting Prime Minister and LVV leader Albin Kurti, LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, and Sejdiu himself.
Sejdiu described the agreement between the two political parties as an honour and thanked both leaders for their support.
“The two parties have reached an agreement on my name as a presidential candidate. This certainly makes me feel honoured,” Sejdiu said.
He declined to comment on questions concerning the political negotiations behind the agreement, stressing that the political process is conducted by the political parties, while the constitutional procedure for electing the President in the Assembly is clearly defined.
“The political process is conducted by the political entities, while the constitutional procedure in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo is known,” he said.
“My primary motivation is to serve the Republic of Kosovo”
Speaking about his decision to accept the nomination, Sejdiu said his primary motivation was to serve the country.
“My primary motivation has been to put myself at the service of the Republic of Kosovo,” he said.
He also expressed confidence that Kosovo would find a way forward and successfully confront the challenges ahead.
“I hope and believe that Kosovo will find a way to move forward and face the major challenges that await us,” Sejdiu said.
A political agreement at a crucial moment
The agreement between LVV and LDK comes at an important moment for Kosovo’s institutions.
By presenting Sejdiu as a joint candidate, the two parties have taken a significant political step toward the presidential election process. The next stage will be the constitutional procedure in the Assembly of Kosovo.
However, the final decision remains with Kosovo’s lawmakers and will depend on securing the votes required under the Constitution.
The agreement between the two parties could therefore become an important test of their ability to cooperate on major institutional issues.
For Sejdiu, the focus now is on the responsibility that comes with the nomination and the opportunity to serve the Republic of Kosovo.
His candidacy moves the presidential process into a new phase, with the key question now being whether the political agreement between LVV and LDK will translate into sufficient support in the Assembly.
