French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced criticism of the recent EU-US trade agreement, arguing it does not go far enough to protect European sovereignty and competitiveness.
Speaking to ministers, Macron said: “To be free, you must be afraid. We were not afraid enough.” French officials reported his comments as a warning that Europe must strengthen its economic sovereignty and push for greater independence.
While the deal brings more “visibility” for French businesses, Macron described it as only a first step and said negotiations must continue.
“Now, more than ever, it’s crucial to accelerate Europe’s agenda for sovereignty and competitiveness,” he said, according to Reuters.
The agreement, struck last week, aims to ease tariffs and open markets but has sparked mixed reactions in Paris and other EU capitals.
