French President Emmanuel Macron announced moments ago that he has decided for France to recognize the State of Palestine.

“Loyal to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Near East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine,” Macron wrote. He added on his Facebook profile, “I will make the official announcement at the United Nations General Assembly in September.”

Urgency in Gaza and Path to Peace

According to President Macron, it is now urgent to stop the war in Gaza and to save the civilian population. “Peace is possible,” he stated.

Macron emphasized the immediate need for a ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. He also stressed the importance of “guaranteeing the demilitarization of Hamas, securing and rebuilding Gaza.”
