Emmanuel Macron, President of France, stated that the recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States against tariffs imposed by Donald Trump highlights the importance of checks and balances and the rule of law in a democracy.
Speaking at the annual agricultural fair in Paris, Macron emphasized the value of institutional oversight.
“It is not a bad thing to have a Supreme Court and the rule of law,” he said. “It is good to have power — and counterweights to power — in a democracy.”
Macron added that France would assess the implications of Trump’s proposed new 10% global tariff but would continue exporting its products.
Supreme Court Strikes Down Tariffs
On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6–3 to invalidate the sweeping tariffs introduced by Trump, delivering a significant setback to one of his most controversial assertions of executive authority and potentially reshaping global economic dynamics.
In the majority opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Court upheld a lower court’s ruling that found Trump’s use of a 1977 law — originally intended for national emergencies — exceeded his constitutional powers.
The decision was supported by a cross-ideological coalition. Conservative justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch joined Roberts and the three liberal justices — Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor — in striking down the tariffs.
The ruling is expected to have significant economic and political implications, both within the United States and internationally.
