Syria’s new President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, received an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron to visit France in the coming weeks, according to a statement from the Syrian president’s office on Wednesday.
The two also discussed, in a phone call, the economic sanctions imposed on the Syrian people, the statement added.
Al-Sharaa recently visited Turkey and Saudi Arabia, where he held official meetings with the leaders of the respective countries.
If Macron’s invitation translates into an official visit in the coming days, it would mark al-Sharaa’s first official visit to an EU country since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
