French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that peace “must not mean Ukraine’s surrender” during a joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
While Macron underscored Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, Trump reiterated that the financial burden of ensuring peace should be shared by European nations, not solely the U.S.
“We have shared our beliefs and demands, and we all know the work that remains to be done,” Macron stated, highlighting progress in discussions.
The French leader also mentioned ongoing efforts to develop an action plan acceptable to Ukraine, stressing the importance of Trump’s upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach an agreement on critical mineral resources.
Both leaders evaluated possible steps toward a “measurable ceasefire and lasting peace” between Ukraine and Russia. Macron concluded by reaffirming that the U.S. remains committed to solidarity in resolving the conflict.
