French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Tuesday that the United States’ threat of imposing new tariffs is “fundamentally unacceptable”, particularly when such measures are used as a tool of pressure against territorial sovereignty.

Speaking at the World Leaders Forum in Davos, Macron criticized what he described as an “endless accumulation of new tariffs” by Washington.

“Competition from the United States through trade agreements that undermine our export interests, demand maximum concessions, and openly aim to weaken and subjugate Europe—combined with an endless buildup of new tariffs—is fundamentally unacceptable,” Macron said.

The French president warned that the world is entering a period of “instability and inequality,” both in terms of security and economic relations.

“Look at the situation we are in,” Macron added, pointing to a “shift toward autocracy” alongside wars across the globe in 2024, stressing that “conflict has become normalized.”

According to Macron, France and Europe remain firmly committed to national sovereignty and independence, principles he said are not outdated, but rather essential reminders of the lessons learned from World War II and the need to remain committed to cooperation.

Macron also addressed France’s participation in military exercises in Greenland, emphasizing that the move was not intended to threaten anyone, but rather to support an ally—Denmark—within Europe.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that there would be “no turning back” from his plan, stating that “Greenland is imperative for national and global security.”
