French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the UN General Assembly in September, reopening the challenge of the two-state solution and triggering strong reactions from Israel and its ally, the United States.

In a letter addressed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Macron wrote: “Our determination to see the Palestinian people have their own state is rooted in our conviction that lasting peace is essential for the security of the State of Israel.”

He added that the diplomatic efforts stem from “our outrage at the terrible humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, for which there can be no justification.”

This diplomatic move aims to restore the Palestinian statehood issue to the international agenda as part of a vision for peace, with a focus on ending the devastating conflict in Gaza.
