A magnitude 6 earthquake struck the eastern Kuril Islands region of Russia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported on Saturday.

According to Reuters, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface. Tremors were felt as far as Hokkaido, Japan, located near the Kuril archipelago — a chain of islands separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean.

So far, no casualties or material damage have been reported. Russian and Japanese authorities have yet to release official statements on whether there is any tsunami risk following the quake.

Eastern Russia is known for its high seismic activity. On July 30, a powerful earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings in Russia, Japan, and the United States.
