Srđan Majstorović, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Center for European Policies, warned that Serbia is approaching a critical moment, stating that citizens must finally decide which direction the country will take. According to him, the current government under the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is steering both the state and society toward “gradual disappearance.”

Speaking on the “Witness of Time” podcast, Majstorović emphasized that it is “high time” for citizens to confront the reality of the political situation and make a fundamental choice about Serbia’s future.

A Regime Concentrating Power Across All Institutions

Majstorović argued that Serbia today resembles states where institutions are captured and where a narrow ruling group accumulates economic, security, and media power. According to historical comparisons, he noted, such systems are “doomed to disappear.”

He stated that the current governance model under President Aleksandar Vučić and the SNS regime has systematically dismantled democratic checks and balances, weakened institutions, and undermined public trust.

Albania and Moldova Likely to Join the EU Before Serbia

In a particularly stark assessment, Majstorović said it is realistic that Albania and Moldova could become EU member states before Serbia, despite Serbia being one of the earliest countries in the region to open accession talks.

The stalled progress, he argued, is a direct consequence of authoritarian governance, lack of reforms, suppression of media freedom, and political interference in institutions.

Majstorović urged Serbian citizens to recognize that the current trajectory is unsustainable and that decisive political change is necessary if Serbia wishes to regain credibility and avoid long-term decline.
