Malta will officially recognize the State of Palestine next month, concluding a 45-year-long national debate on the issue, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced.
“We Cannot Turn a Blind Eye to Human Tragedy”
Abela emphasized that Malta’s decision is a response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where nearly 54,000 Palestinians have been killed.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to this human tragedy, which worsens every day,” he stated, according to Malta Today.
The Prime Minister shared his personal experience from a recent visit to refugee camps in Jordan, where he met Palestinian children brought to Malta for medical treatment.
Recognition Set for Late June
Abela confirmed that Malta will formally recognize Palestine by the end of June 2025, calling the move a moral obligation of the state.
“This is not only a political act—it is a humanitarian and ethical responsibility,” he said.
Global Context and Solidarity
Malta joins over 140 countries that have recognized Palestine so far, positioning itself among nations advocating for a two-state solution and Palestinian sovereignty amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
