Iran’s judiciary has carried out the public execution of a man convicted of raping and murdering a young girl in northwestern Iran.

According to Naser Atambati, the prosecutor of West Azerbaijan Province, the execution was conducted at dawn and in public, “at the request of the victim’s family and local citizens, due to the profound emotional impact the case had on the local community.”

So far, no details have been released regarding the girl’s age, the identity of the perpetrator, or the exact timing of the crime.

The trial began in January, and the defendant was sentenced to death in March. The Supreme Court of Iran upheld the ruling after an appeal was filed.

In Iran, crimes such as murder and rape are punishable by death. According to human rights groups like Amnesty International, Iran ranks second in the world for executions, following China. Public executions in the country are typically carried out at dawn, most often by hanging.
