Torrential rains have triggered severe flooding in Bulgaria, particularly affecting the Burgas region, where the popular tourist village of Elenite was among the hardest hit.

According to Alexander Dzhartov, Chief Commissioner for Security and Fire Protection, residents of Elenite had been warned about the rainfall, but the intensity of the storm increased unexpectedly.

“Over the past 24 hours, we’ve responded to more than 400 emergency calls — 340 of them related to adverse weather conditions. Most involved removing hazardous debris and fallen trees. The rest were linked to evacuations, drainage operations, and securing buildings,” said Dzhartov.

He added that hundreds of people have been evacuated and temporarily housed in municipal facilities, where they are being provided with food and drinking water.

Dzhartov noted that the material damage has not yet been fully assessed but is expected to be significant. So far, there have been no official reports of casualties.
