A report by an organization advocating for migrants’ rights revealed that, on average, 30 people died daily attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean in 2024.

The total death toll marks a 58% increase compared to the previous year. Tens of thousands of migrants departed from West Africa in 2024, heading toward the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago near Africa’s coast, increasingly used as a transit point to mainland Europe.

The report highlighted that most fatalities occurred along the Atlantic route, described as the world’s most dangerous migratory path.

Key Figures:

  • Total Deaths: Over 10,000
  • Children: 1,538
  • Women: 421
  • Deadliest Months: April and May

A “sharp increase” in boats departing from Mauritania was noted, with the country becoming a key departure point for the Canary Islands route.

In response, Spain pledged €210 million in February to assist Mauritania in combating human trafficking and preventing boats from setting sail.

Migration Numbers

Spain’s Interior Ministry reported that more than 57,700 migrants arrived in Spain by boat by December 15, 2024, reflecting a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
