Valon Mehmetaj, the brother of Nezir Mehmetaj, who was sentenced to six years in prison for war crimes by the judicial authorities in Serbia, stated in an interview with RTK that they were informed of his sentence by their lawyers and the Liaison Office of Kosovo there.
“As you have learned from various sources, my brother has been held in a Serbian prison since January 3, 2020. After numerous court hearings, on December 6, the sentence was handed down by the Serbian judiciary, and as a result, Nezir Mehmetaj was sentenced to six years in prison. We received this news immediately after the session ended from the lawyers and from the official of the Liaison Office of the Republic of Kosovo. This news is not welcomed by the family, as for almost five years there has been not a single piece of evidence linking my brother to the charges against him. It is indicative that this trial has been prolonged, starting in March 2021 and concluding on December 6, 2024, more than three and a half years. However, we hope that the justice system in Serbia will deem it reasonable to release Nezir as soon as possible, considering the time already served and that the further proceedings will continue,” Valon Mehmetaj told RTKlive.
Kosovo citizen Nezir Mehmetaj has been sentenced by Serbian judicial authorities to six years in prison on charges of war crimes.
The time spent in detention will be taken into account in the sentence, and this first-instance decision by the Serbian judiciary can be appealed.
Mehmetaj will appeal the sentence for war crimes from the Serbian court.
