Giorgia Meloni announces an upcoming meeting to discuss Italy’s approach to sending migrants to Albania following a favorable ruling by Italy’s High Court.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reiterated her stance on sending migrants to Albania, following a recent decision by Italy’s High Court. Speaking from Finland, Meloni confirmed that a meeting would be held on Monday to discuss the next steps regarding Albania and migrant returns.
“I’ve called for a meeting tomorrow regarding the Albania issue to determine how we will proceed,” Meloni stated after attending the Northern Europe-South summit in Saariselka, Lapland.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the High Court had ruled in favor of the Italian government, asserting that it is within the government’s rights to designate which countries are considered safe for the return of migrants. “It seems that the High Court ruled in favor of the government, as it is the right of governments to decide which countries are safe, while judges can review individual cases, but not enforce them entirely,” she said.
Meloni’s comments signal continued Italian efforts to manage migration issues within the European framework, particularly concerning the handling of migrants from countries like Albania.
