Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that she hopes to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts to help bring peace to Ukraine.

Speaking during a joint press conference in Rome with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Meloni emphasized Trump’s potential role in achieving a lasting resolution to the war.

“We hope to be able to share this achievement. I believe he can make a difference in reaching a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, and at that point we would be able to formally nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Meloni said.

Relations with the United States

Addressing transatlantic relations, Meloni stressed that the willingness to cooperate with the United States remains strong, adding that Italy and Germany are among the European countries with privileged relations with Washington.

She noted that this relationship is partly shaped by the presence of U.S. military bases on Italian and German territory, underlining the strategic importance of continued cooperation.

The Italian prime minister also called for a “pragmatic, not instinctive, approach” in dealings with the United States.

Trump and the Nobel Peace Prize

President Trump has expressed interest in winning the Nobel Peace Prize for several years. Last year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, recently presented Trump with the Nobel Peace Prize medal during a visit to the White House.

However, the Norwegian Nobel Institute clarified that the prize cannot be transferred, shared, or withdrawn, meaning the honor formally remains with Machado, despite the symbolic gesture.
