Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized today that European countries must do everything in their power to avoid a trade war with the United States.

“We agree that we must, at all costs, avoid a trade war between the two sides of the Atlantic,” Meloni stated during a joint press conference with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in Rome on Tuesday.

Meloni discussed the issue with Stocker, stressing the importance of European leaders working together towards a “mutually beneficial” agreement.

Her comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Monday, July 14, that a 30 percent tariff on imports from the European Union will take effect on August 1 if both sides fail to reach a new trade agreement. Trump had indicated he remains open to further trade negotiations with the EU.
