Rome prosecutors have opened an investigation against Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and two government ministers regarding the repatriation of a Lebanese commander wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Meloni herself announced on Tuesday.
In a video posted on social media, she revealed that prosecutors in Rome are investigating her for allegedly aiding and encouraging Ossama Anjie, also known as Ossama al-Masri.
Meloni stated that her Ministers of Justice and Internal Affairs, as well as a deputy secretary, are also targeted in the investigation.
Meloni’s government has faced criticism from the opposition, human rights groups, and the ICC itself for the release of al-Masri due to a technical matter, after he was arrested in the northern city of Turin under a warrant from the international court.
