German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced today that Germany will not join Western allies in recognizing a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.
The statement comes after France, the United Kingdom, and Canada declared their plans to support recognition of Palestine at the UN. However, Merz stressed that Berlin’s stance remains unchanged.
“We will not join this initiative. We do not see that the necessary conditions have been met,” Merz said during a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Berlin.
Carney previously confirmed in late July that Canada intends to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly, following similar announcements from France and the UK.
