German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has left open the possibility of deploying German armed forces to Ukraine as part of a potential multinational peacekeeping mission.

Speaking to journalists, Merz stressed that current discussions are focused on the post-war period, noting that Ukraine will require security guarantees once the conflict ends.

The Chancellor explained that any deployment of German troops would be one of several commitments made by different countries in the event of a ceasefire, emphasizing that such steps would be taken within a broader international framework.

Multinational “Coalition of the Willing”

Merz also highlighted that the so-called “coalition of the willing” includes countries beyond Europe, specifically mentioning Canada and Australia as part of the initiative.

Addressing the same issue, Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil reaffirmed Germany’s strong stance in support of Kyiv.

“Germany is Ukraine’s largest supporter and will always fulfill its responsibilities,” Klingbeil said.

Germany has been one of Ukraine’s key military, financial, and humanitarian backers, and Berlin continues to play a central role in shaping Europe’s response to the war.
